Meaning

Janmashtami is the joyful remembrance of Krishna descending into the world.

The word Janmashtami joins Janma, meaning birth, and Ashtami, the eighth lunar tithi. For devotees, it is not only a historical remembrance; it is the night when divine love, wisdom and leela are welcomed into the home and heart.

Families celebrate Bal Gopal with bhajans, fasting, jhanki, cradle seva, aarti and bhog. The mood is devotional and joyful: Krishna is welcomed as the child of the home and the guide of the soul.

Spiritual Significance

Why Krishna Janm is spiritually powerful

Dharma in darkness

Krishna was born in a prison at midnight, reminding devotees that divine light can appear even in the deepest difficulty.

Bhakti with sweetness

Janmashtami carries vatsalya bhav: the devotee lovingly serves Krishna as Bal Gopal with tenderness and joy.

Wisdom and leela

Krishna is worshipped as the giver of Gita wisdom and the playful Lord whose leela draws the heart toward the divine.

Krishna Janm Katha

The story of Krishna Janm: hope, protection and divine grace.

Devaki and Vasudev were imprisoned by Kansa after a prophecy declared that Devaki's eighth child would end his cruelty. In that darkness, Bhagwan Krishna took birth at midnight.

The prison doors opened, the guards slept, and Vasudev carried the divine child across the Yamuna to Gokul. Krishna was raised by Yashoda Maiya and Nanda Baba, filling Braj with makhan leela, flute, compassion and divine play.
